CM Punjab Launches Electric Bus Project – A Step Toward Modern and Sustainable Public Transport

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has introduced a transformative electric bus project in Punjab, designed to modernize public transportation while promoting environmental sustainability. This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to sustainable development, eco-friendly mobility, and improved public services for citizens across the province.


Project Overview

Under the plan, a total of 1,500 electric buses will be deployed in phases across multiple cities of Punjab.

  1. First Phase: The rollout will begin with 380 electric buses in Lahore and Gujranwala, with procurement processes already underway. The target for completion of this phase is set for June 2025
  2. Future Expansion: The project will later expand to Sargodha, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Gujrat, Rahim Yar Khan, and Dera Ghazi Khan, ensuring that clean and affordable transport reaches both major cities and regional hubs.

Features of the Electric Buses

The buses are equipped with modern facilities to ensure passenger comfort, safety, and accessibility:

  1. Capacity: Each bus accommodates 80 passengers with 30 comfortable seats.

  2. Amenities: Onboard Wi-Fi, GPS tracking, USB charging ports, anti-slip flooring, and surveillance cameras for enhanced safety.

  3. Accessibility: Special ramps for differently-abled passengers, making travel more inclusive.

  4. Infrastructure: Dedicated electric bus stops will be established, offering water coolers, fans, and mini canteens for commuters.
